|Rescue Me ID: 18-01-12-00240Dashacross 'Dash' (male)|
Dash is a heroic pup who had a rough start at the hands of a bad owner who almost starved him to death. Rescued at four months by a local no-kill shelter in Southwest Virginia, he had very extensive, excellent veterinary and foster care that brought him to the peak of health and, as you can see, to a wonderful state of mind. After five months of home-based foster care with loving, very-experienced caretakers, Dash is currently in a top-flight private residential boarding facility (ends mid-March 2018) where he enjoys a climate-controlled cabin and acres of exercise space, organic and supplemented diet, plenty of socialization with other well-behaved dogs, professional training and a whole crew of dedicated human handlers. Dash is a happy, energetic 10 m/o pup who enjoys other dogs, well-behaved children, plenty of exercise in wide-open spaces, new experiences outdoors (especially running up and down steep places), toys with squeakers or plenty of floppiness, interactive games, and talking with humans (he really does 'talk'). He has some lingering concerns about strange or loud noises and certain human-body language, but is easily reassured with kind words and strokes. He appreciates having his human kneel next to him and 'explain' what's happening in new or scary situations. He also will join right into the merriment if his human makes light of sudden, startling bangs/crashes with a silly song and/or lighthearted 'OOPSY-DAISY' tones! Because of his early experiences, Dash is extremely sensitive to human tone and body language--and angry attitudes upset him greatly. But his high intelligence and superb care have made it possible for him to move on, and with continued good handling, he will be able to realize his full potential as an ideal companion to some lucky family. So,the bottom line is that Dash needs an upbeat, gentle, fun-loving household with plenty of good will, laughter and love of exercise. He's a snuggler par excellence when he feels safe and secure, and is delighted when his human responds to his 'let's play' overtures. His current training is focused on consistency of obedience (overcoming his puppy distractibility), basic commands, good leash manners and extending his 'hold' time for toileting. Someone out there will find a treasure when they adopt this pup. He's a true hero and smart as a whip to boot! (Less)

|Rescue Me ID: 18-01-11-00030Mia (female)|
The name Mia, has two meanings, 'beloved' and 'my'or 'mine.' Mia is a 40lb 17 month-old female Terrier mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Mia is housetrained and crate trained. She was fine being left in the crate when her person was out, but she has slowly been trusted with free run of the house. She is currently left for up to 6 hours home alone without incident. Mia is affectionate, eager to please, joyful, playful, well-behaved and puppy-like. She knows 'Sit' and 'Down,' and is learning, 'Wait' and 'Come.' Mia loves to chase balls and will even bring them back . . . but, she would rather not let them go to be thrown, again! Mia walks well on leash. She now walks with a 'Halti' lead. Mia loves walks. She whines a little at first because she is so happy and excited. Mia is smart and responsive with a strong desire to please. She attends Upbeat K9 to work on dog socialization and learn how to play. She has done very well and would benefit from continued training in this program or other obedience training and regular work with her adopter to build on her skills and develop a trusting bond. Mia currently lives with one other dog. After a slow, five-day introduction, they get along well together. Mia has not met any cats. She doesn't live with children, but she has spent time with her foster mom's 8-year-old grandson and was fine with him. She is initially excited to meet new people, but will sit and receive pats when given the opportunity. Mia's high energy, intelligence and willingness to please, will make someone a loyal hiking or running partner. Mia is not all, go-go-go, she has a quiet cuddly side too. When you are ready to kick back on the couch and chill, Mia is, too. In fact her favorite place to snuggle is on the couch, with her head resting in your lap. What could be better than that? Mia wants someone to call her 'my beloved.' We bet she will have you singing, 'Mamma Mia! Here I go again, my-my how can I resist ya?'
